At Kents Hill Junior School, Children are given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of a variety of text types during their reading lessons. We provide children with a rich experience of reading. They gain an understanding of an author's use of language as well as the structural features of a text type.
We promote reading for pleasure and encourage children to be reading on a regualr basis at home to gain a richer vocabulary and critical thinking skills. This enables children to become independent learners.
To ensure that all children have a clear understanding of phonics, the school uses rapid phonics which runs alongside our rapid reading programme to support children who do not enter the key stage with a sound understanding in this area.
The New Reading Garden Opening
On Friday 30th June, Rebecca Harris, the MP for Castle Point, came to open our brand new reading garden. She spoke to the children and took part in a range of interactive reading activities. The newly built reading garden has plenty of comfortable seating for children to enjoy a book. It is used during English lessons for drama performances and to share pieces of work with each other. It is also open during lunch time for the children to have a calm, relaxing place to go and read or do some quiet activities.
